The Ann Arbor Chinese School in Michigan was established in 1974. The school was registered with the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) in Taiwan and is a nonprofit organization in the U.S.A., with aims to promote Mandarin learning and Taiwanese culture to the local community. The school launched the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) in March 2022, set up within the school’s organizational structure and supervised by the Board of Directors. The TCML in Ann Arbor is the first TCML in the state of Michigan. It is equipped with abundant software and hardware, well-qualified teaching staff, and excellent instructional content to promote Mandarin learning and Taiwanese culture to the mainstream community. Building on nearly 50 years of the school’s Mandarin education experience, the TCML in Ann Arbor has become the leading hub in Michigan for promoting Mandarin learning with Taiwanese characteristics.
The TCML adopts small-group instruction with a maximum of 10 students in a class. In March 2002, the center’s first term has begun, for a length of twelve weeks. Each class offers two hours of in-person instruction at the University of Michigan Turner Resource Center and one hour of online lessons. Target students are adults aged 18 and over from the mainstream community. Currently there are two classes (intermediate and basic) with a total of 14 students, taught by teachers Yu-Jo Chou Philson and Ko Yu Chan.
